WELDON 7" BACK UP LAMP
WELDON #1010-1100-30
BLUE BIRD #0084302

New York Bus Sales, LLC. recently learned through DOT out of Albany that there is an issue relating to the above mentioned Weldon back up lamp in that it does not carry the "R" designation which is required by DOT.

Blue Bird delivers all its new units with Bader-Brown back up lights. With issues we heard of in the field with those lights and the fact that the other 7" lights on the rear of the units were also Weldon, we decided some time ago to change the back up lights also as part of our pre-delivery and have had practically no warranty issues.

We are currently working with Weldon on a resolution but currently other than an LED they have no other 7" clear "back up" lights. Should you choose to replace with the Bader-Brown light, the Blue Bird part number is 0025926 and it does in fact carry the "R" designation.

With the issues that we had with those lights, we are researching another compatible light and will revise this notice when we have more information available. We are told that having an incorrect light is an "A" failure with NYSDOT which would take units out of service but DOT will not enforce that regulation stringently until December so operators have time to become compliant.

IC Corporation responds:
IC Corporation's compliance organization, on behalf of Leonard Bus Sales and our customers, is in direct contact with NYS D.O.T. regarding the "non-compliant" seven inch Weldon back up lamp. We are presently evaluating alternate sources and working with Weldon to develop a corrective action for all affected users. Please be assured that this matter is being addressed with the highest urgency, and we appreciate your patience as we determine the appropriate course of action.

Rusty Seastrum, Chief Technician, NYS DOT Passenger Carrier Safety Bureau responds:
The Weldon 1010 white lens does not meet SAE standard J593c, which refers to J759 for identification. It is my understanding that Weldon is now aware of the problem and are working on it. A quick fix is to add one inexpensive compliant lamp on the rear of the bus that only has the 7 inch non-compliant lamps.

Busses presented after December 1, 2007 must be compliant. However, our staff has been instructed to only identify the non-compliant lamps on regular inspections. That means the buses inspected between now and December 1, 2007 won't have to be made compliant until about two weeks prior to their certificate expiration in late April 2008.
