Trip Permits Required for travel to DC
Submitted by Robin Leeds, Industry Specialist, National School Transportation Association

As of August 1, Washington DC officials have begun enforcing a new law passed in March that requires any bus with a seating capacity of more than 15 passengers from any US state or Canadian province that is bringing a chartered group into the city to have either an IRP registration with DC recorded on their cab cards or a DC trip permit. This applies to school buses, unless they display government plates. (Apparently, a "school bus" plate does not qualify for exemption.) The fine for failure to comply is $500 per vehicle.

At least two school buses, one from MD and one from PA, have been caught in this enforcement and hit with the $500 fine. Please let your school districts and terminal managers know that any buses you send into DC for activity trips or other charters will need to have a permit if they do not already have IRP apportioned plates.

You can apply online for a DC trip permit, which costs $50 for up to 6 days. Go to https://public.dmv.washingtondc.gov/scripts/vs/online_trip_permit_rqst.asp. You will need a credit card to process the transaction. For more information on the permit, including how to order by mail and how to get bulk permits, go to http://dmv.dc.gov/info/trippermit.shtm.
